LES CHIENS PEUVENT-ILS MANGER RAW MEAT ?
Raw meat diets are controversial: some dogs thrive on them, but raw meat consistently carries Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and parasite risks — for the dog and for the humans handling it.
Pourquoi ?
Raw meat diets (BARF — Bones and Raw Food, or prey model diets) are followed by many owners with apparently healthy dogs. The practice has a genuine following and some advocate benefits including improved coat and energy. However, major veterinary organizations (AVMA, AVDS, CDC) advise against raw meat feeding based on documented public health and animal health risks.
Raw chicken, beef, and pork regularly test positive for Salmonella — which dogs can carry and shed asymptomatically, exposing household humans, especially immunocompromised individuals and young children. Raw pork carries Trichinella. Raw fish (particularly salmon, trout, and steelhead) can carry Neorickettsia helminthoeca — the agent of Salmon Poisoning Disease, which is fatal to dogs if untreated.
If you choose a raw diet, work with a veterinary nutritionist, source from reputable suppliers, handle with the same hygiene as human food preparation, and be especially cautious with raw salmon and pork.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Not a dose-response toxin issue. Pathogen risk is present at any amount of contaminated meat.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- Salmonella: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy; Salmon Poisoning Disease: vomiting, fever, bloody diarrhea — potentially fatal without treatment
Que dois-je faire ?
For any raw meat GI illness with fever: contact vet immediately. Salmon poisoning is treatable with antibiotics if caught early — fatal if missed.
Questions fréquentes
Is raw chicken safe for dogs?
Raw chicken carries Salmonella and Campylobacter risk. Some dogs eat it without obvious illness; the pathogen can still be shed in their environment, posing a risk to humans.
Is raw salmon dangerous for dogs?
Yes — specifically because of Salmon Poisoning Disease caused by Neorickettsia. Always cook salmon before feeding it to a dog. This is a Pacific Northwest–specific risk (salmonid fish from the Pacific Coast).
