LES CHIENS PEUVENT-ILS MANGER SALMON ?
Cooked salmon is an excellent omega-3-rich food for dogs — raw Pacific salmon can carry Neorickettsia helminthoeca, which causes "salmon poisoning," a potentially fatal disease in dogs.
Pourquoi ?
Salmon is among the best foods for dogs when cooked: extremely high in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) that support coat health, joint function, and cognitive function. Many veterinary diets for dogs with allergies, joint disease, or skin conditions use salmon as the primary protein.
The critical caveat: raw or undercooked Pacific Northwest salmon (and some other Pacific fish) can harbor a trematode parasite (Nanophyetus salmincola) that carries Neorickettsia helminthoeca bacteria. When a dog eats infected raw fish, the bacteria is released and causes "salmon poisoning disease" — a rapidly progressive illness that is fatal in up to 90% of untreated cases within 2 weeks. Cooking kills both the parasite and the bacteria.
Farmed Atlantic salmon has lower parasite risk than wild-caught Pacific salmon, but cooking is still the safest approach. Remove all bones before serving.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Cooked: not toxic. Raw: even small amounts of infected fish can transmit SPD.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- salmon poisoning disease: fever, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, dehydration, swollen lymph nodes, discharge from eyes/nose
Que dois-je faire ?
If raw salmon was consumed: contact your vet immediately even if the dog seems fine — symptoms take days to appear and the disease has a very high mortality rate if untreated. Treatment with antibiotics (tetracyclines) is effective if started early.
