Pourquoi ?

Bacon is one of the highest-fat, highest-sodium processed meats available. A single slice of cooked bacon contains 3–4g of fat and 130–190mg of sodium. Dogs who eat bacon regularly or in large amounts risk two serious conditions: pancreatitis (acute inflammation of the pancreas, triggered by high fat intake) and sodium ion poisoning.

Pancreatitis presents as acute vomiting, abdominal pain, and lethargy within 24–48 hours of a high-fat meal. Severe cases are life-threatening and require hospitalization. Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, and Shetland Sheepdogs are particularly prone.

Bacon is also preserved with nitrates and nitrites, artificial smoke flavoring, and sometimes sugar — none of these are beneficial. An occasional bite of bacon as a rare treat is unlikely to cause harm in a healthy large dog, but "occasionally" should mean rarely.

Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?

No specific toxic dose, but pancreatitis can be triggered by a single high-fat meal in susceptible dogs. Salt toxicity becomes relevant at large amounts.

Is turkey bacon safer than regular bacon?

Turkey bacon has slightly less fat but similar sodium content. Not a significant safety improvement — treat with the same caution.

Can dogs eat bacon grease?

No. Bacon grease is essentially pure fat with concentrated salt. A high risk for pancreatitis with essentially no nutritional benefit.
