LES CHIENS PEUVENT-ILS MANGER CHEESE ?
Most dogs can eat small amounts of low-lactose hard cheeses like cheddar without issue — but lactose-intolerant dogs get significant GI upset, and all dogs should be limited due to high fat and sodium content.
Pourquoi ?
Dogs do not produce large amounts of lactase, the enzyme needed to digest lactose (milk sugar). However, hard aged cheeses (cheddar, parmesan, Swiss) contain significantly less lactose than fresh cheeses (ricotta, cottage cheese) or liquid dairy (milk), making them better tolerated by most dogs.
For training purposes, small cubes of low-lactose cheese are an extremely effective high-value reward. The fat and sodium content means cheese should be an occasional treat rather than a regular food supplement. High-fat foods also carry pancreatitis risk in susceptible breeds (Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, Shetland Sheepdogs).
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Not toxic. Excess causes GI distress in lactose-intolerant dogs; pancreatitis risk in high-fat-sensitive breeds from chronic excess.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- gas and bloating (in lactose-intolerant dogs)
- vomiting/lethargy/abdominal pain (pancreatitis from high fat)
Que dois-je faire ?
For small amounts: monitor for GI signs. For pancreatitis symptoms: emergency vet.
Questions fréquentes
What kind of cheese is safe for dogs?
Low-fat, low-salt, hard aged cheeses — cheddar, mozzarella, or Swiss — are safest. Avoid blue cheese, brie, and any cheese with herbs or seasoning (especially garlic and onion).
Can dogs eat cream cheese?
Cream cheese is high in lactose and fat. Small amounts as an occasional treat in most dogs is fine, but it's not a good regular food.
