LES CHIENS PEUVENT-ILS MANGER MILK ?
A few tablespoons of milk occasionally won't harm most dogs, but many are lactose intolerant and develop diarrhea and GI distress — it's generally not worth the risk.
Pourquoi ?
Dogs lack sufficient quantities of lactase to fully digest lactose in cow's milk. While puppies produce more lactase (to digest their mother's milk), adult dogs have reduced capacity, and cow's milk has higher lactose concentrations than dog milk. The result: many adult dogs develop diarrhea, vomiting, and gas within hours of drinking cow's milk.
Goat's milk has somewhat lower lactose content and is tolerated better by some dogs. Lactose-free milk is safe for dogs in the same way it is for lactose-intolerant humans. But there is no nutritional need for dogs to consume milk after puppyhood.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Not toxic. GI upset from lactose intolerance at individual thresholds.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- excessive gas
- abdominal discomfort
Que dois-je faire ?
No action needed for mild GI symptoms — they typically resolve within 24 hours. Provide water and temporarily reduce food. Contact vet if symptoms are severe.
Questions fréquentes
Can I give my dog a little milk as a treat?
A tablespoon or two occasionally is unlikely to cause harm in most dogs, but given the near-universal lactose intolerance issue, choose a different treat.
Is goat milk safe for dogs?
Goat milk has slightly less lactose than cow milk and is better tolerated by some dogs. Raw goat milk (available frozen) is used by some raw-feeding communities — discuss with your vet.
