LES CHIENS PEUVENT-ILS MANGER CHIVES ?
Chives are the most potent Allium family member by weight — even small amounts of fresh or dried chives can cause life-threatening hemolytic anemia in dogs.
Pourquoi ?
Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) contain n-propyl disulfide and other organosulfur compounds in higher concentrations than onions or garlic per gram of fresh weight. Like all Allium species, these compounds oxidize hemoglobin in red blood cells, producing Heinz bodies that trigger immune-mediated destruction of the cells.
The danger with chives is their ubiquity: they appear fresh or dried on baked potatoes, in sour cream, on soups, in compound butters, and as garnishes on countless restaurant dishes. Dried chives are especially concentrated. A small sprig knocked off a plate or a lick of chive-seasoned sour cream repeatedly given can accumulate to a toxic dose.
Cumulative exposure is the key risk — each small dose adds to the total. Dogs fed table scraps containing chive garnishes over weeks can develop hemolytic anemia without any single large exposure.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Toxicity reported at ≥0.5% of body weight in Allium species. Chives are more concentrated than onions — smaller quantities apply. Any repeated exposure warrants concern.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- weakness and lethargy
- pale or white gums
- rapid breathing
- reduced appetite
- orange or brown urine (hemolysis)
- collapse in severe cases
Que dois-je faire ?
Contact your vet. Blood count is needed to assess red blood cell destruction. Severe anemia requires IV fluids and potentially a transfusion.
Questions fréquentes
Can dogs eat food garnished with chives?
No. Even a small sprinkling of chives is not safe. Tell restaurant and household cooks not to add chives to anything shared with your dog.
Are freeze-dried chives worse than fresh?
Freeze-drying concentrates the toxins. Dried or powdered chives carry more risk per gram than fresh.
