Pourquoi ?

Scallions are immature onions harvested before the bulb develops. Every part — green tops, white base, and bulb — contains n-propyl disulfide and related organosulfur compounds that cause oxidative damage to canine red blood cells (Heinz body hemolytic anemia).

Scallions appear raw in salads, on tacos, in stir-fries, and as garnishes across Asian and Western cuisines. The green tops are often perceived as "mild" or "just herbs," but the toxin concentration is equivalent to other Allium species. Stir-fried scallions retain their toxicity — heat does not neutralize organosulfur compounds.

A medium-sized dog eating the scallions from a shared stir-fry portion can accumulate a significant toxic dose in a single meal.

Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?

Same threshold as onions: approximately 0.5% of body weight. A handful of scallions can be toxic for a medium dog.

Quels sont les symptômes ?

DÉBUT :3–5 days for hemolytic anemia; GI symptoms may appear within hours of large doses.
  • weakness
  • pale gums
  • rapid heart rate
  • lethargy
  • reduced appetite
  • discolored urine
  • vomiting in acute cases

Que dois-je faire ?

Contact your vet immediately. Blood work to assess red blood cell count. Severe anemia requires hospitalization.
