LES CHIENS PEUVENT-ILS MANGER PECANS ?
Pecans contain juglone (a phenolic toxin) and are highly susceptible to aflatoxin-producing mold — both cause serious liver and neurological damage in dogs.
Pourquoi ?
Pecans share the juglone toxicity of black walnuts — this phenolic compound can cause GI irritation and neurological symptoms. More concerning is the aflatoxin risk: pecans, particularly those stored improperly or past their date, readily host Aspergillus flavus mold, which produces aflatoxins — among the most carcinogenic and hepatotoxic natural compounds known.
Aflatoxin-contaminated pecans cause severe acute liver failure. The toxin is not visible, not detected by smell, and not destroyed by cooking. Even seemingly fresh pecans from mixed bags may be affected. The combination of juglone content and mold susceptibility makes pecans more dangerous than most other tree nuts.
Pecan pie and praline candies are doubly dangerous — they combine pecans with high sugar content and often contain xylitol.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Juglone toxicity at moderate quantities. Aflatoxin: even small amounts of heavily contaminated nuts can cause acute liver failure.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- vomiting
- lethargy
- loss of appetite
- jaundice (liver failure)
- seizures (aflatoxin or juglone neurological effects)
- abdominal pain
- dark urine
Que dois-je faire ?
Contact your vet. Liver function tests needed. Aflatoxin toxicity has no antidote — treatment is supportive.
Questions fréquentes
Can dogs eat pecan pie?
No — pecan pie combines toxic nuts with high sugar, often corn syrup, and sometimes xylitol. Triple hazard.
Are roasted pecans safer than raw?
Roasting does not neutralize juglone or aflatoxins. Both raw and roasted pecans should be kept from dogs.
