Pourquoi ?

Almonds are not on the same level of acute toxicity as macadamia nuts or grapes. They don't contain known canine-specific toxins. However, several properties make them a food to avoid.

Dogs do not efficiently digest almonds — the hard, dense nut passes partially undigested, causing GI upset including vomiting, diarrhea, and gas. The high fat content (14g per ounce) is a reliable pancreatitis trigger, particularly in predisposed breeds. Whole almonds in small dogs can cause intestinal obstruction.

Salted almonds compound the sodium concern. Flavored almonds (garlic, onion, cinnamon-coated) add toxic ingredients. The only "safe" form would be a single unsalted, unflavored almond — and even then, the digestive difficulty means there's no benefit that justifies the risk.

Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?

Not acutely toxic. GI distress from digestive difficulty; pancreatitis from fat at meaningful quantities.

Quels sont les symptômes ?

DÉBUT :GI: 2–24 hours.
  • vomiting, diarrhea, gas (poor digestion); pancreatitis signs from fat excess

Que dois-je faire ?

One almond ingested accidentally: monitor for GI symptoms. Handful or more: contact vet, particularly for small dogs (obstruction risk).

Questions fréquentes

Is almond butter safe for dogs like peanut butter?

Almond butter is not as dangerous as whole almonds (easier to digest), but check for xylitol and share only in small amounts. Peanut butter (xylitol-free) is generally preferred.

Can dogs eat almond flour?

Almond flour in small amounts in dog treats is not acutely harmful, but it's calorie-dense. Occasional treats made with almond flour are fine.
