LES CHIENS PEUVENT-ILS MANGER ACETAMINOPHEN (TYLENOL) ?
Acetaminophen causes fatal liver failure and destroys the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity — a single extra-strength tablet can be lethal for a small dog.
Pourquoi ?
Acetaminophen (paracetamol) is metabolized in dogs differently than in humans. Canine livers rapidly deplete their glutathione reserves — the molecule that neutralizes acetaminophen's toxic metabolite (N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine, or NAPQI). Once glutathione is exhausted, NAPQI accumulates and causes two simultaneous emergencies: hepatocellular necrosis (liver cell death) and methemoglobin formation.
Methemoglobin cannot carry oxygen, causing the blood to turn chocolate-brown and the dog to suffocate from the inside. Facial swelling — particularly around the muzzle — is a hallmark sign unique to acetaminophen toxicity in dogs.
Cats are even more sensitive than dogs, but the dog toxic dose is still alarmingly low. One regular-strength tablet (325mg) can cause serious liver damage in a 10-lb dog. Combination cold/flu medications often contain acetaminophen and are a common exposure route.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Liver damage begins at approximately 75–100mg per kg. Methemoglobin formation at lower doses. One regular-strength tablet (325mg) is dangerous for dogs under 4kg (9 lbs); an extra-strength tablet (500mg) is dangerous for dogs under 7kg (15 lbs).
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- facial swelling (muzzle, eyes)
- muddy brown gums (methemoglobin)
- labored breathing
- lethargy
- vomiting
- jaundice (yellow skin/eyes) as liver fails
- coma
Que dois-je faire ?
Immediate emergency veterinary care. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the antidote — it must be given early to be effective. Oxygen therapy for methemoglobin. The window for effective treatment is narrow.
Questions fréquentes
Can I give my dog Tylenol for pain?
Never. Acetaminophen is not safe for dogs at any dose. Contact your vet for safe pain management options.
What if the medication was "children's" Tylenol?
Children's formulations are also toxic — they often contain less acetaminophen per dose but the same compound. Any exposure warrants an emergency vet call.
