Pourquoi ?

Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a salicylate NSAID that inhibits COX enzymes and platelet aggregation. Dogs metabolize aspirin more slowly than humans — the half-life in dogs is 7.5 hours compared to 6 hours in humans, causing greater accumulation. The prolonged exposure damages the gastric mucosa and reduces renal blood flow.

Aspirin causes irreversible platelet dysfunction, meaning blood cannot clot normally. Combined with gastric ulceration, this creates a high risk of serious internal bleeding. Enteric-coated aspirin is not safer — the coating delays absorption but the same total amount is absorbed.

While some older veterinary protocols used low-dose aspirin before safer alternatives existed, it is no longer recommended. Modern veterinary NSAIDs have dramatically better safety profiles. Aspirin use in dogs should only occur under direct veterinary supervision.
