Warum?

Pomegranate (Punica granatum) arils (the red seed sacs) contain antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium, and folate. The antioxidant concentration is extremely high. However, the plant also contains tannins and other compounds that are GI irritants for dogs.

The rind and peel contain even higher tannin concentrations — these can cause significant vomiting and diarrhea. Pomegranate extract (a concentrated form) has caused toxicity in dogs at small doses.

The seeds within the arils are hard and do not digest well, passing through the GI tract intact and potentially causing irritation in the process. Most dogs that eat a few pomegranate arils show only GI upset, not serious systemic toxicity. But the lack of a clear benefit relative to the consistent GI irritation means pomegranate is better avoided.

Welche Menge ist gefährlich?

Not acutely lethal at small amounts. GI upset from arils; more serious effects from rind/extract.

Häufige Fragen

Is pomegranate juice safe for dogs?

No — juice is a concentrated source of tannins and sugars without the fiber buffer of whole fruit.

Can dogs eat the pomegranate seeds?

The seeds (inside the arils) are hard and indigestible, passing through intact with potential GI irritation. The arils themselves are the part that might be occasionally tolerated in very small amounts.
