Pourquoi ?

Star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) contains high concentrations of oxalic acid and soluble oxalates. In dogs, these compounds bind calcium in the bloodstream (causing hypocalcemia) and deposit as calcium oxalate crystals in kidney tubules, leading to acute renal failure.

Star fruit also contains a neurotoxin — not fully characterized — that causes hiccups, vomiting, and in severe cases, seizures and death. This neurotoxic component appears to be filtered by healthy kidneys, but in dogs with reduced kidney function, it accumulates rapidly even from small amounts.

Star fruit is common in tropical regions and increasingly available in US grocery stores. The attractive appearance and sweet flavor make it appealing to curious dogs.
