LES CHIENS PEUVENT-ILS MANGER SALT (SODIUM) ?
Salt causes sodium ion poisoning in dogs — vomiting, seizures, and fatal brain damage can result from large ingestions such as playdough, rock salt, or saltwater.
Pourquoi ?
Dogs require some sodium for normal body function, and the small amounts in commercial dog food are safe. The danger is excessive sodium intake — large amounts of salt draw water out of cells, causing dehydration and a dangerous electrolyte imbalance called hypernatremia.
As cells lose water to the hypertonic bloodstream, brain cells shrink. This causes neurological symptoms progressing from disorientation to seizures and cerebral hemorrhage. The correction is equally dangerous: rehydrating too quickly causes brain cells to swell (cerebral edema).
Common high-salt hazards: homemade playdough (very high salt content and attractive to dogs), rock salt (used for ice melting), soy sauce, heavily salted snacks (chips, pretzels), salt licks, pickle juice, and seawater (beach dogs who drink it). Salty snacks in small amounts cause only temporary thirst — the emergency threshold is a meaningful ingestion.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Toxic effects begin at approximately 4g of salt per kg of body weight. One tablespoon of table salt is approximately 17g — enough to cause serious toxicity in a 5kg (11 lb) dog.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- extreme thirst and urination
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- lethargy
- incoordination
- muscle tremors
- seizures
- coma in severe cases
Que dois-je faire ?
Emergency vet immediately for large ingestions. Do not force water — controlled IV rehydration by a vet is required to prevent dangerous cerebral edema during correction.
Questions fréquentes
Can dogs eat salty crackers?
A cracker or two occasionally is unlikely to cause sodium poisoning, but salty snacks are not beneficial and should not be a habit.
My dog ate playdough — is that dangerous?
Yes. Homemade playdough contains enormous amounts of salt. This is a genuine sodium poisoning emergency — call your vet immediately.
What if my dog drank ocean water at the beach?
A few laps are unlikely to cause toxicity, but significant drinking of seawater can cause hypernatremia. Ensure fresh water is always available and monitor for symptoms.
