LES CHIENS PEUVENT-ILS MANGER ALCOHOL ?
Alcohol affects dogs with the same mechanism as in humans but at far lower doses — a tablespoon of spirits can cause alcohol poisoning in a small dog.
Pourquoi ?
Dogs absorb ethanol rapidly, and their livers metabolize it far more slowly than humans. The result: blood alcohol concentration rises faster and stays elevated longer. The same blood alcohol level that causes mild intoxication in an adult human can cause seizures, respiratory failure, or a fatal hypoglycemic crisis in a medium-sized dog.
Ethanol is present in obvious sources (beer, wine, spirits) but also in fermented fruit, some mouthwashes, vanilla extract (35% ethanol), rum-soaked fruitcake, and unbaked bread dough (yeast fermentation produces ethanol in the stomach). Beer is particularly dangerous because it also contains hops, which are independently toxic.
There is no safe recreational dose of alcohol for a dog. Even "beer for dogs" novelty products that contain no actual ethanol are not worth encouraging the behavior of drinking from a bottle.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Ethanol toxicity begins at approximately 0.59g per kg of body weight. A 10-lb dog can develop serious toxicity from 1 teaspoon of spirits or half a glass of beer.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- loss of coordination and staggering
- disorientation
- excessive drooling or panting
- vomiting
- seizures
- respiratory depression (slow breathing)
- hypothermia (dangerously low body temperature)
- coma
Que dois-je faire ?
Emergency veterinary care immediately. Treatment is supportive: IV fluids, warming, monitoring blood glucose and respiratory status. There is no antidote — time and supportive care are the treatment.
Questions fréquentes
Can dogs have beer?
No. Beer contains both ethanol and hops, both toxic to dogs. Even a few sips from an unattended glass is a veterinary emergency for small dogs.
Is cooking wine or vanilla extract dangerous?
Yes. Vanilla extract contains 35% ethanol — a teaspoon contains as much alcohol as a full shot of spirits. Cooking wine is similarly dangerous.
What if my dog licked up spilled alcohol?
A brief lick of a small spill is unlikely to be dangerous for a large dog. If your dog consumed more than a few drops, call your vet with the dog's weight and the type and estimated amount of alcohol.
