Pourquoi ?

Raw bread dough containing active yeast creates two simultaneous emergencies. First, yeast fermentation causes the dough to expand dramatically in the warm, moist environment of the stomach, potentially causing gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV or bloat) — a rapidly fatal twisting of the stomach that kills without emergency surgery.

Second, the fermenting yeast produces ethanol as a byproduct. Alcohol absorbed from the stomach enters the bloodstream directly, causing rapid-onset alcohol poisoning. A dog that eats a large ball of raw dough can develop a blood alcohol level equivalent to drinking several shots of spirits.

Baked bread (fully cooked, no active yeast) does not carry these risks. Only raw, actively fermenting dough is dangerous.

Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?

Any significant quantity of raw yeast dough is dangerous. A golf-ball sized piece of raw dough can cause both bloat and alcohol poisoning in a medium-sized dog.

Quels sont les symptômes ?

DÉBUT :Expansion begins immediately; bloat symptoms within 1–2 hours; alcohol symptoms within 30–60 minutes.
  • distended or hard abdomen
  • retching without vomiting
  • drooling
  • restlessness
  • disorientation (from alcohol)
  • staggering
  • rapid breathing
  • collapse

Que dois-je faire ?

Emergency vet care immediately — this is one of the true acute emergencies. GDV requires surgical intervention within hours to prevent death. Do not attempt to induce vomiting (the dough may already be expanded).

Questions fréquentes

Can dogs eat baked bread?

Yes — fully baked bread with no toxic ingredients (garlic, onions, raisins, xylitol) is generally safe in small amounts. The danger is raw dough only.

What if my dog just ate a small piece of raw dough?

Even a small amount warrants veterinary contact, particularly for small dogs. The dough will continue expanding and fermenting in the stomach.
