Pourquoi ?

Hops (Humulus lupulus) contain compounds — including resins, essential oils, and alpha and beta acids — that trigger malignant hyperthermia in dogs. This is a syndrome of uncontrolled muscle metabolism that causes body temperature to spike to 106–108°F or higher. Without treatment, this causes organ failure and death rapidly.

Home brewing has made hops more accessible as a household item. Spent hops (used in brewing) retain their toxicity. Dogs who get into a homebrew setup, spent hops compost, or dried hops pellets are at serious risk.

Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?

Even a small amount (a handful of dried hops pellets) can trigger malignant hyperthermia.

Quels sont les symptômes ?

DÉBUT :Signs appear within 30–60 minutes and can escalate rapidly.
  • hyperthermia (body temp >104°F)
  • panting aggressively
  • anxious or restless behavior
  • muscle tremors
  • rapid heart rate
  • vomiting
  • seizures
  • organ failure

Que dois-je faire ?

Emergency veterinary care immediately. The dog's body temperature must be brought down while underlying toxicity is treated. This is a time-critical emergency.
