DÜRFEN HUNDE HOPS ESSEN?
Hops used in home brewing cause malignant hyperthermia in dogs — a rapid, uncontrolled rise in body temperature that can be fatal without immediate intervention.
Warum?
Hops (Humulus lupulus) contain compounds — including resins, essential oils, and alpha and beta acids — that trigger malignant hyperthermia in dogs. This is a syndrome of uncontrolled muscle metabolism that causes body temperature to spike to 106–108°F or higher. Without treatment, this causes organ failure and death rapidly.
Home brewing has made hops more accessible as a household item. Spent hops (used in brewing) retain their toxicity. Dogs who get into a homebrew setup, spent hops compost, or dried hops pellets are at serious risk.
Welche Menge ist gefährlich?
Even a small amount (a handful of dried hops pellets) can trigger malignant hyperthermia.
Welche Symptome gibt es?
- hyperthermia (body temp >104°F)
- panting aggressively
- anxious or restless behavior
- muscle tremors
- rapid heart rate
- vomiting
- seizures
- organ failure
Was soll ich tun?
Emergency veterinary care immediately. The dog's body temperature must be brought down while underlying toxicity is treated. This is a time-critical emergency.
