Pourquoi ?
Mustard seeds contain glucosinolates — compounds that are enzymatically converted to isothiocyanates when the seed is chewed or processed. Isothiocyanates are potent irritants that cause severe GI inflammation: excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Prepared mustard (the condiment) contains mustard seed along with other potentially harmful ingredients including vinegar, salt, and sometimes garlic or onion. Even small amounts of prepared mustard have caused significant GI distress in dogs.
While mustard-induced gastroenteritis is generally not as immediately life-threatening as some other toxins, the GI inflammation can be severe and prolonged. In large amounts, systemic effects including liver stress can occur.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Even a tablespoon of prepared mustard can cause significant GI irritation. Mustard seeds in larger quantities are more concerning.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- excessive drooling
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- abdominal pain
- lethargy
- loss of appetite
Que dois-je faire ?
Contact your vet. Most cases are managed supportively. Large ingestions warrant examination for GI inflammation.
