Warum?

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) contains furanocoumarins — compounds that inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver, disrupting how the body metabolizes many drugs and nutrients. In dogs, furanocoumarins cause photosensitivity, GI upset, and at high doses, CNS depression.

The essential oils in grapefruit peel (d-limonene, linalool, bergamottin) are directly toxic to dogs, causing GI irritation and CNS effects similar to other citrus species. The flesh itself is highly acidic and causes GI distress even without the peel toxins.

Unlike oranges, grapefruit has no safe portion for dogs — the flesh contains more furanocoumarins than other citrus, and the toxin profile makes even moderate amounts a concern.

Welche Menge ist gefährlich?

The peel and essential oils are toxic at any meaningful amount. Even the flesh causes GI upset and furanocoumarin exposure.

Welche Symptome gibt es?

BEGINN:GI signs within 1–2 hours.
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • lethargy
  • sensitivity to light
  • weakness (concentrated peel exposure)
  • CNS depression at high doses

Was soll ich tun?

Contact your vet if significant grapefruit (especially peel) was consumed. Monitor for GI signs for 12 hours after small exposures.
