Warum?
Orange flesh is not toxic to dogs. It provides vitamin C, fiber, potassium, and thiamine. However, the citrus flavor is not appealing to all dogs — many will simply walk away from a piece of orange.
The peel is a different matter: citrus peels contain d-limonene, linalool, and other essential oils that can cause GI irritation in dogs. Citrus companies also treat orange peel surfaces with pesticides and preservatives. The white pith between flesh and peel contains flavonoids that can cause GI upset in larger amounts.
The seeds contain small amounts of cyanogenic glycosides — in the tiny quantities within an orange segment, not practically dangerous, but best removed.
For healthy dogs, one or two segments of peeled orange is a safe occasional treat. The sugar content is moderate — diabetic dogs should avoid it. The acidity of citrus can also irritate sensitive GI systems.
