Warum?
Figs (Ficus carica) contain ficin, a proteolytic enzyme, and ficusin, a psoralen compound in the leaves and white latex sap. These compounds cause contact irritation to the skin, mouth, and GI tract in dogs.
The flesh of ripe figs is less concentrated in these irritants and is not acutely toxic in small amounts. Dogs can eat one or two fig slices without serious consequence. The issue is consistent GI irritation: figs are a natural laxative even in humans, and their high fiber and fructose content causes diarrhea in dogs at small-to-moderate amounts.
Fig Newton cookies contain figs but also high sugar, refined flour, and sometimes cinnamon. These are not the same as fresh figs and should not be given to dogs.
Welche Menge ist gefährlich?
Not acutely lethal. GI irritation from ficin/ficusin; diarrhea from fiber/fructose.
Welche Symptome gibt es?
- vomiting, diarrhea, mouth irritation — GI irritation from sap and enzymes
Was soll ich tun?
A small piece of ripe fig flesh: monitor for GI upset. Fig leaves or sap contact: wash skin with water and contact vet.
