Warum?
Capsaicin is the compound that makes hot peppers "hot." In mammals, it binds to TRPV1 receptors — pain receptors that respond to heat and tissue damage. In dogs, this causes genuine pain and burning sensation in the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. Unlike sweet bell peppers, hot peppers are not something dogs can safely eat.
Dogs exposed to cayenne pepper or chili powder typically show immediate distress: pawing at the face, excessive drooling, whimpering, and attempts to reduce the burning by rubbing the face on surfaces. GI effects follow: vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.
Capsaicin sprays are used as deterrents for dogs (keeping them from chewing furniture or approaching specific areas). These sprays work because dogs are genuinely aversed to the pain — it is not a smell preference but an actual pain response.
Welche Menge ist gefährlich?
Not lethal at typical kitchen quantities, but causes significant distress and GI inflammation at any meaningful amount.
Welche Symptome gibt es?
