Warum?
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) contains piperine — the compound responsible for its heat and pungency. In dogs, piperine irritates the mucous membranes of the nose, throat, and GI tract. Even a light dusting of black pepper on food can cause sneezing, coughing, and GI upset.
Inhaling black pepper powder can cause significant respiratory irritation and uncontrolled sneezing that is uncomfortable for the dog. Eating significant quantities causes vomiting and diarrhea from GI irritation.
Small traces of black pepper in human food occasionally shared with dogs are unlikely to cause meaningful harm to a large dog. But deliberately adding pepper to dog food, or offering heavily peppered food, is inadvisable. There is no nutritional need for pepper in a dog's diet.
Welche Menge ist gefährlich?
Not acutely toxic at trace amounts. GI irritation from meaningful quantities (teaspoon+).
Welche Symptome gibt es?
- sneezing, coughing, GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea) from meaningful amounts
Was soll ich tun?
Trace amount on shared food: no action needed. Large amount or respiratory distress from inhaling: contact vet.
Häufige Fragen
Can dogs eat lightly peppered food?
Very light pepper on food shared occasionally is unlikely to cause harm in a large dog. It's not worth the irritation risk, but it's not a poisoning emergency.
Can black pepper be used to deter dogs from chewing?
It can serve as a deterrent because dogs dislike the smell and pungency. This is the one "use" for pepper around dogs, but it should never be ingested in meaningful amounts.
