Warum?

Baking soda is pure sodium bicarbonate — an alkaline compound that rapidly changes blood and tissue pH when ingested in meaningful quantities. Dogs may eat it directly if it spills, or if they access an open container. Baking soda is also present in toothpastes and cleaning products.

Ingested baking soda causes metabolic alkalosis (blood pH rises above normal range), electrolyte disturbances (low potassium and calcium), muscle tremors and spasms, vomiting, and in severe cases, heart arrhythmias and congestive heart failure.

Baking powder contains baking soda plus tartaric acid or cream of tartar and sometimes aluminum sulfate. The acid-base reaction compounds GI effects and the potassium bitartrate can cause additional electrolyte disruption.

Trace baking soda in baked goods is not a concern — the small quantity and its chemical transformation during baking eliminate the risk. The danger is accidental ingestion of dry baking soda or baking powder directly from the container.

Welche Menge ist gefährlich?

Toxicity begins at approximately 10–20g per kg. A standard box (16 oz / 454g) of baking soda can cause toxicity in a dog of any size.

Welche Symptome gibt es?

BEGINN:Within 30 minutes to 2 hours of significant ingestion.
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • muscle tremors and spasms
  • lethargy
  • excessive thirst
  • difficulty breathing
  • heart arrhythmias
  • collapse

Was soll ich tun?

Emergency veterinary care. Treatment includes IV fluids to correct electrolyte disturbances and pH, cardiac monitoring, and supportive care.

Häufige Fragen

My dog got into the baking soda — is a small amount dangerous?

A very small lick from a spill is unlikely to cause serious harm. If more than a teaspoon was consumed for a small dog, call your vet.

Is baking soda safe if it's in baked dog treats?

Yes — in baked goods, baking soda reacts with acids and is neutralized by heat. The tiny residual amount in a finished baked good is safe.
