Pourquoi ?
Lemons (Citrus limon) contain d-limonene and linalool in their peels — essential oils that are directly toxic to dogs, causing GI irritation, CNS depression, and in concentrated forms (citrus-based sprays, lemon oil) more serious effects. The lemon peel and white pith contain the highest concentrations.
The lemon flesh is extremely acidic (pH 2–3) and causes significant GI distress — vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort — even in small amounts in most dogs. Unlike oranges, there is no practical "safe" portion of lemon for dogs because the flavor itself is aversive (it's actually used as a deterrent spray for training).
Lemon-flavored products — lemon curd, lemon-flavored candy, lemonade — often contain high sugar or xylitol, compounding the hazard.
Quelle quantité est dangereuse ?
Even a small amount of lemon peel or juice can cause GI distress. The essential oils are toxic at higher concentrations.
Quels sont les symptômes ?
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- excessive drooling
- lethargy
- weakness (concentrated essential oils)
Que dois-je faire ?
If only a brief lick of lemon flesh occurred, monitor for GI upset. If significant peel or lemon oil was ingested, contact your vet.
Questions fréquentes
Can dogs eat a lemon-flavored treat?
Only if you verify the ingredients contain no lemon oil or peel, and no xylitol. Artificial lemon flavor (citric acid-based) is less concerning than real lemon extract.
Why do some videos show dogs reacting to lemons?
Sharing videos of dogs reacting to lemon taste is popular but unkind — dogs are experiencing genuine distress and GI irritation, not just making funny faces.
