Warum?

Macadamia nuts cause a distinctive toxicosis in dogs with no known equivalent in other animals. The specific toxic compound has not been identified despite extensive study. The syndrome is relatively mild compared to grape or xylitol toxicity — it is rarely fatal — but it is painful and warrants veterinary care.

The mechanism appears to target the peripheral nerves and musculature, causing a temporary inability to use the hind limbs effectively. Most dogs recover fully within 24–48 hours with supportive care, but the combination of weakness, hyperthermia, and pain makes it distressing for the dog.

Macadamia nuts are frequently found in cookies and trail mix — the combination of macadamias and chocolate in cookies creates a dual toxicity emergency.
