DÜRFEN HUNDE CRAB (PLAIN, COOKED) ESSEN?
Plain cooked crab meat is safe for dogs and a good protein source — but crab shells are sharp and dangerous, and imitation crab contains additives and high sodium.
Warum?
Cooked crab meat provides complete protein, vitamin B12, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. It's not toxic to dogs and is used in some commercial seafood dog food blends.
The shell is the primary hazard: crab shells are rigid and sharp. Large shell pieces can lacerate the mouth, throat, or GI tract, and smaller pieces can cause intestinal irritation. Always remove all shell before offering crab to a dog.
Imitation crab (surimi) is made from pollock shaped and flavored to resemble crab. It contains artificial flavors, high sodium, and various additives — generally not appropriate for dogs despite being technically "cooked fish." Real crab in plain preparation is preferable.
Crab is also high in sodium naturally (~370mg per 3oz serving), so it should be a treat rather than a regular dietary component.
Welche Menge ist gefährlich?
Not toxic when plain. Shell: mechanical injury hazard.
Welche Symptome gibt es?
- shell ingestion: GI irritation, possible obstruction or laceration; excess: sodium effects
Was soll ich tun?
Shell-free crab meat: no action needed. If crab shell was eaten: monitor for GI symptoms, contact vet if pain or vomiting develops.

No — crab cakes typically contain bread crumbs, seasoning, garlic, onion, and sometimes Old Bay spice (which contains celery salt and paprika). Too many additives.
