Warum?

Sardines are small, short-lived fish that don't bioaccumulate mercury to the degree that larger fish like tuna and swordfish do. They are exceptionally rich in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which reduce inflammation, support skin and coat health, aid cognitive function, and may help with joint pain in older dogs.

Sardines also provide vitamin D, vitamin B12, and calcium (from soft, edible bones). They are among the most cost-effective omega-3 sources compared to fish oil supplements.

Offer sardines packed in water (not oil, which adds unnecessary calories, and not brine, which is too salty). Plain canned sardines with no added salt or seasonings are ideal. One or two sardines per week is sufficient for a medium dog — more than this isn't harmful but adds significant calories.

Häufige Fragen

Can dogs eat sardines every day?

1–2 sardines a few times a week is ideal. Daily feeding is not harmful, but adds significant calories and may cause fishy coat odor.

Sardines in olive oil versus water — which is better?

Water-packed sardines are preferable — olive oil adds unnecessary fat. If only oil-packed are available, drain thoroughly.
