Why?

Flaxseeds contain omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), lignans (phytoestrogenic antioxidants), and both soluble and insoluble fiber. Regular supplementation supports coat health, reduces inflammation, and benefits digestive regularity in dogs.

Critically: whole flaxseeds are encased in a hard hull that the canine digestive system cannot break open. Whole seeds pass through undigested and provide minimal nutritional benefit. Ground flaxseeds (flax meal) release the oils and nutrients.

Store ground flaxseed in the refrigerator — the exposed oils oxidize and turn rancid quickly at room temperature. Rancid flaxseed causes GI upset. Flaxseed oil is also an option and doesn't require grinding, but loses the fiber benefit.

A quarter to half teaspoon of ground flax per 10 lbs of body weight is a reasonable daily amount.

How much is dangerous?

Not toxic. Large amounts cause loose stools from fiber.

What are the symptoms?

ONSET:N/A — not toxic.
  • GI softness from fiber overload — not toxicity

What should I do?

⚡

No action needed for appropriate amounts of ground flaxseed.

Frequently asked questions.

Can dogs eat whole flaxseeds?

They can eat them, but they won't benefit from them — whole seeds pass through undigested. Always use ground flaxseed.

Is flaxseed oil as good as fish oil for dogs?

Flaxseed provides ALA, which dogs must convert to EPA and DHA. This conversion is inefficient in dogs compared to the direct EPA/DHA in fish oil. Fish oil is generally preferred for anti-inflammatory benefits.
