CAN DOGS EAT ALMOND MILK?
Plain unsweetened almond milk is safe for dogs in small amounts — lactose-free, with trace almond content. Sweetened versions and those with xylitol are not safe.
Can Dogs Eat Almond Milk?
Why?
Plain unsweetened almond milk is made from blended almonds and water, with most of the almond fiber and fat removed. The resulting beverage contains very little actual almond — primarily water with minimal protein and fat. This makes it safe for lactose-intolerant dogs as a dairy alternative in small amounts.
The xylitol risk is significant: many "unsweetened" almond milks use xylitol as a sweetener instead of sugar. Check the label every time. Sweetened almond milk with sugar adds unnecessary calories without benefit.
Chocolate almond milk contains theobromine. Vanilla almond milk contains vanilla extract (alcohol). Only plain, unsweetened almond milk with no xylitol is safe.
How much is dangerous?
Plain unsweetened: not toxic in small amounts. Xylitol-containing: toxic at 0.1g/kg.
What are the symptoms?
- xylitol-containing: hypoglycemia, liver failure; plain: GI upset in sensitive dogs at large amounts
What should I do?
Plain unsweetened, small amount: no action needed. Xylitol-containing: emergency vet immediately.
